Son, back when I was your age,
I wish I'd had "The Talk".
Sure, some folks might have tried
but they weren't convincing I guess.
I wish someone had made me see
that my life was my own to master ~
that I was the artist, mighty and accountable.
Instead at your age, with bated breath, I waited.
I waited to grow up, anxious to be my own boss.
Eventually the time came when I'd grown up
and soon found myself dazed and ill-prepared.
You see... when you're young, time seems to go so slow.
Trust me, it's only an illusion.
Time is your most precious commodity.
Pinpoint what you value most and hold on tight.
Have a dream and follow through.
Be strong. Be just. And be committed.
Before you know, responsibilities will assail you,
pulling you in every direction if you're not steadfast.
Don't expect it to be easy, or expect handouts from anyone.
Expect to sweat for everything you get.
Your future is not chance, it's your responsibility.
Design for yourself the best life you can possibly imagine.
Work for it. Make adjustments along the way.
But stick with it and make your dreams come true.
This is my gift to you: the power of knowing early that
you and only you hold the key to how happy you can be.
