The Sleeper

It's the middle of the night My heart beats loudly Feels ill contained Looking for an exit As each thump hits Like a runaway train It's not accompanied By racing thoughts Any thought at all Feels like it needs Carefully selecting From a closed book Found via the index I'll just wait for quietness It's approaching The trick is avoiding A line switch From heart to mind Where sleep is whisked away And a new discomfort settles
