It must have been something
He was thinking of doing for a while
It happened suddenly but he’d thought it over
I could tell there were words left unspoken
That would reveal truths to me
When the hearts were broken
~
But truly, now that I am saying it
Did he feel at all the way I felt?
Was it in him to give of himself?
When I loved him did he love me back?
There are so many questions
Left unanswered, and straggling
Around my mind with question marks
~
My mind seems to be thinking up
All the possibilities of a lie that lives
Forever compromising and chilling
Spinning words from the fake tales
That have been told to avoid revealing
Secrets of dark and dreadful beatings
Inside a heart that is truly cheating
On love, on hope, on faith, on God
~
It could have been my own fault
And in a way it was – I let it go on
For so long, too long to truly be sure
If it was my own selfishness, a hope
That I wouldn’t end up alone again
Without someone to eat dinner with
Someone to talk to on the phone
And ask questions that would be
Answered with affectionate lies
~
I don’t know what to do yet I guess
The newness of his disappearance is fresh
Like a new rose opening up to the sunlight
All its petals are trying to reawaken
The soft center that has been waiting
Waiting forever it seems – for the light
To force it from a bud into a beautiful flower
