The Right Time

As a freshman in High School I broke all the rules. Smoking butts in the stalls to skipping study hall.
With no guidance and little support I started using drugs. After the house burned down I came unwound.
Shortly after I was expelled My life was tumbling fast.
15 years old on a dead end road. Getting back into school I was doing well.
Met some kids who broke the rules. Feeling like I fit in. I was depressed lonely and scared. Speed was my new friend.
Missing 365 days of school It’s a miracle where I am.
There was a teacher who understood my situation all to well. She decided to help me out.
I stopped the drugs and worked real hard. I was able to graduate with my class.
She told me to never give up, when the road gets tough. To follow my dreams whatever they may be and if you work hard enough anything is possible.
Now here I stand as a published poet and a degree in hand. I will never forget all she did. or the lessons she taught me along the way.
The other day I went to say thanks. Come to find out Mrs. Cotty had passed away.
