The Precious Jewels

"The days are jewels, keep them with care". Jackie Kennedy

    Aquamarine were summers with siblings
beneath skies of blue riding bikes or swimming.
Days of emerald too were times we spent outside -
barefoot on our lawn, badminton rackets in hand.
We’d stroll past Grandpa’s cornfield down the country lane
        searching for raspberries to pluck.
Such awesome times of jade were games we played outside.

Rose quartz I collected as romantic daydreams.
Stories I read in books (depending on their plot)
glittered like gems of amethyst or citrine.
Pearls were winter weekends spent sledding or skating
but diamonds were holidays with family.

Opal’s shifting colors were my school days.
Slumber parties glistened an iridescent pink.
With my sisters I'd talk into black onyx nights
and chase summer’s fireflies that shimmered peridot.

Most fondly of all do I recall first love.
Red ruby’s passion set my heart aglow.
No other memories have shone more brightly than
the precious jewels of my youth.

I like Jackie Kennedy's line that is quoted. Our days are jewels and how many times have we said we will be glad when this day is over. I enjoyed reading your colorful jewel laden work. Thanks for sharing it with us. It reads like a good contender to me. Way to go. Sara K

Andrea, You composed a creative, concise and illuminating piece with your discrete dispersal of jewel references. It glistens, gleams, glows. Howard

Your poem is a tender tableau of memory, longing, and identity—each gem-chapter casting a kaleidoscope of color across a youthful life. It’s emotionally coherent, symbolically resonant, and elegantly structured. You invite the reader to collect their own “jewels of youth,” and in doing so, make nostalgia into something shimmering and precious.

Very beautiful, and reminiscent of most forks on some level of early development. Well done. Enchantingly expressed. You get a FAV from me. Colors, minerals, scents vistas, they are inside of us as well as outside -- every one of us is an individualized part of the entire wondrous mystery of creation. Separation of any form, is only an illusion of consciousness...during deep, mystic prayer, such flares of realization crystalize, burst into stars of enfolding light, bathing us with divine presence and a profound sense of Almighty relationship. This is why we are able to write so passionately about such extemporaneous nature in very personal, deeply connected ways.
