The Poem Is What You Are

A girl of sixteen said to me Write a poem on me I asked why She said to see how you see me Let the poem be a mirror you make for me. I looked into her eyes The eyes with pearls of morning dew Led me deep into her heart The heart where nascent love grows in the veins I read there a poem written in three words Innocent dreams fly. I could add no other word Nor write another poem I said to her look into your eyes You’ll read my poem in your heart The poem is what you are. June 2, 2018.
