THE PATH WELL TRAVELLED.
Two paths diverged, and I was thrown by doubts I had never known To my left, thickly overgrown, was a path to dismal dimness prone. To my right, a lovely sight-fragrant flora flamed in light Forms so graceful, beauty rare, a wonderous vision beyond compare. Both seduced with equal right, torn was I between dark and light. Resisting limits of time and sight, a liminal border of cosmic might. Hesitancy rapt with fear and doubt, the pondering heart beat aloud. Tempting was the path so grand, but instinct cautioned of a treacherous hand. A feathery touch, a breeze stirred, and in its sigh, a voice I heard. Was it Hecate who whispered? "Take heed. Beware, for each path leads to a different lair." Crystal clarity knew what I must do, and with a heart filled with valour true, Joyously, I strode wild and free down the well-trodden path ahead of me. The leaves, like frisking lovers, played as I embarked my chosen way. Future paths ~ So many dreams ~ Each a thread in life's grand scheme. Though true discovery lay in paths, I'd roam ~ The one well travelled always led back Home.
By Maria Williams © Greeks worshipped Hecate as a guardian and gatekeeper who could ward off evil forces. She is often represented carrying a torch and a key and standing on the liminal border between one place and another. She bears three heads and always has a dog by her side. Inspired by Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken', I chose to write an alternative version. 'The Road Not Taken' is one of Robert Frost's most famous poems. It's natural and understandable that many readers take the poem to be Frost's statement of individualism as a poet: he will take 'the road less travelled'. The metaphor of the road is one that immediately evokes a journey, not just of the local or day-to-day kind, but of the life-defining sort: life as a journey, with many roads which we must travel along, and with many alternative paths which we must choose between. Maria, From a repeated dreams, back in high school. I written about coming to a fork in the road that led to two houses. Where I had to make a life choice on which house I should go through. A long story short. I believe I made the right choice for all that I was going through at that time. Beautifully written, I like your poem as much as Robert Frost!

I am happy I could find one more gifted poet on this site. Frost's The Road not Taken is one of my favorite poems. When we are at the cross roads of life, which route we should choose, often puts us in a difficult situation demanding much insight and intuition. The course of our life can easily change just by the choice we make. Glad finally you chose the well trodden path. A lovely poem and a clever alternative version to Frost's poem. Congratulations Maria on your POTD, though belated.

Dearest Maria, my awesome PS sis and gifted poetess, I adore the creative enlightened path your vivid verse took me down. A deep, rich, thought-provoking piece. Indeed, the attraction of both dark and light paths can be equally alluring.. Your last two couplets are stunning and bring this piece to an exquisite finale. Belated congrats for POTD honors recognizing your brilliant verse. I hope all is well with you and yours. Warmest wishes my sweet friend.. ~Susan

I love this. I too would take the well traveled path. Love how you say it leads home. I wrote my poem to Frosts model as well. Not posted yet. I took the path less traveled and which never led me back home. I really related to that in your piem. However, I have had good experiences along with some bad, but who knows what I would have encountered going back home!

My life has been an example of carving my own way. I align more with reading Jack London stories of how to get things done then the Ivy league I am sometimes surrounded by. And so I sometimes look for the well traveled path so as not to have to challenge and learn on all things at once all the time. This leaves some of my friends confused. Why are you not on the latest tech? How come you aren't reading about this new thing that you aren't using yet? ( uh... time... productivity.. :D

Is technology moving too fast for us to keep up? Sometimes it feels like we barely have time to catch our breath. But let's not forget the benefits of how things used to be done. It's undeniable – less stress. You sound like you're doing just fine Susan, take things slow, there's a lot to be said about a stress free lifestyle. Thanks for the lovely visit and comment. I appreciate it...Hugs

I enjoyed this technically rich poem, Maria, and I'm not at all surprised it was honoured with p.o.t.d. award. The path well travelled might be easier to take, but the destination is not always the expected one! After all, it's said that fortune favors the brave, thus sacrifice could yield better results. This also applies to us writers, when to achieve better results, we are expected to think outside the box. ~ Congratulations & Hugs, my friend // paul

I'm so glad you liked my version, dear Paul. How right you are, too. The path well travelled might be easier to take, but the destination is not always the expected one! After all, it's so true that, especially over the last few years, we have been tested to the limit—business-wise, that is. It's always a pleasure seeing you, Paul, along with your valuable insights. Love and hugs my dear friend.

Maria you have certainly received a host of comments and well deserved. I enjoyed both the read and the audio. Loved the imagery created by your first two stanzas. Wazza I posted a poem today that also deals with life's journey metaphorically.

Dear Maria, you've created a beautiful version of ' The Road Not Taken, ' and the guardian the Greeks worshiped. I'm not familiar with ' Hecate, ' but she sounds interesting. I'm captivated with your final thought: ' The one well traveled always led back Home. ' Choosing the right path is best. So wonderful seeing your words in the spotlight. Congratulations my dear friend, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. :) Hugs, Brandy

Congratulations on POTD., Maria... Your poem beautifully captures the universal experience of facing choices and uncertainty in life's journey. The imagery of the diverging paths, one overgrown and ominous, the other adorned with vibrant flora, vividly illustrates the contrast between darkness and light, doubt and clarity. It portrays the inner conflict and hesitation faced when confronted with such pivotal decisions, evoking a sense of tension and introspection.. Nice to see you posting.

Dear S1, It's such a pleasure seeing you, especially as I know you have been really busy lately. Choices in life are such a challenge, aren't they? But by encouraging us to embrace introspection and confidently make decisions, it inspires us to take control of our lives and shape our own destinies to an extent. Your analogy is excellent and well put. Thanks for taking the time my dear friend...Hugs

A thought-provoking take on "The Road Not Taken" Maria, and nicely worded, "A feathery touch, a breeze stirred, and in its sigh, a voice I heard."

Hi Maria, no, I took a stab at the Cruella DeVil singalong contest though and did a takeoff on a Bob Dylan song. I also liked your, "The one well-travelled always led back Home." line. It seems my life keeps looping back.
