Notes About The Poem

The miscarriage of justice continued today in the Senate. My response to the what the Senate has become in the United States.

The Obiturary of the United States

Lower the flags to half mast,
America the Beautiful has been gutted,
Its word emptied of all meaning,
There is no jubilant throng singing,
“Glory, glory Hallelujah!”
Our nation’s heroes rise
From their earthen graves enraged
And cry out to the heavens,
“Have our cruel deaths been in vain?!”
Their ghosts march en masse
On the nation’s capital to haunt
Those who have betrayed our nation
In the Chamber of the Senate.

Abraham Lincoln holds his head in his hands,
And weeps bitterly for his nation.
All he endured to protect the Union from traitors
Has been destroyed in a single vote.
Our Founding Fathers who had sacrificed all
Watch in horror as the orange faced buffoon
Mounts the steps of the Capital with
The beloved Constitution of the United States
Attached to the bottom of his shoe
Like used toilet paper.
Tomorrow morning in newspapers
Throughout the nation the obituary is written,
“The United States of America,
Born on July 4, 1776, died on February 5, 2020
In the Senate, Washington D.C.

Dear Robert: be vigilant for democracy & America, but never despair. Think of Dec 7th, 1941 - a shock like nothing before on TV, too. Then USA became a superpower. God controls rise & fall of Nations ( Book of Daniel, Old Testament, esp. chapters 6-12). Shalom Shalom

Thank you Vickie. I lived through the violence of the 60's and saw how close the U.S. came to being torn asunder, but not even then with all the assassinations of that time had the nation been so rip apart as what has happened over the past three years.

But he knows more than the generals, he has said so himself! Conquer and divide with narcissistic pride! I try to stay away from political discussions but your best poem on the subject that expresses so well my feelings too, caused me to leave a reply. It is a truly sad situation that so many who follow refuse to see. A Fave from me! Blessings

Thank you Connie. Having grown up in Chicago during the 60's with the memories of the Martin Luther King Jr riot, the 1968 Democratic Convention, the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, followed by the Nixon years, the Vietnam War, I once thought the U.S. had learned its lesson and would never return to violence and chaos of those years. Trump has proven those sentiments wrong. What has transpired in the past weeks and continues to happen is an attack upon American democracy. These are far more serious times.

Good piece! The glory of America has been severely battered. A dictatorship is knocking at her door to take her remains for interment.

Daniel, there is always room for hope. I suppose I am best described as a cynical optimist.

Thank you Alison. I have been following the New Hampshire primaries this evening and praying that the collective wisdom will reveal a champion for our nation.

The truth will always set you free. Many need to search what is being said, instead of making assumptions. ~ Brandy
