The New Norm

As sentient beings,
we wear an assortment
of social and emotional masks.
Men adopt a passive-aggressive
featureless frown, dealing with the public.
And women apply a cosmetic veil;
transforming their skin
into porcelain perfection;
out of phase with reality.
Our most common masks
model painted dolls with rosy cheeks and a smile.
At work, we don professional, no-nonsense masks;
and yet again, come evening, slip on our
most revealing masks with sexual overtones.
Like a chameleon or quick-change artist,
we can instantaneously
alter our appearance to fit our needs.
But wearing a health mask is different;
they save lives;
and need to be worn as the new norm
to shield us all from the coronavirus.
