The New Norm

As sentient beings,
we wear a conscious assortment
of social and emotional masks.
We adopt a passive-aggressive
featureless frown whenever we're in public.
And women wear a fixed cosmetic veil,
transforming their au naturel morning faces
into porcelain perfections,
out of phase with reality.
Our most common masks
are like painted dolls, with rosy cheeks and a smile.
At work, we don professional, no-nonsense masks,
and yet again, come evening, we slip on our
most revealing disguises, with sexual overtones.
Like a chameleon or quick-change artist,
we can instantaneously and instinctively,
alter our appearance to fit our needs.
But these latest health masks are different,
they save lives while projecting potential hope,
and are universally accepted as the new norm.
