The Look
Everyone knows that Jesus walked on water. I was also one who walked on water(for a little while).
I was the one who said, "Lord you know that I love you". I was the one who cut off a man's ear in defense of Jesus.
I was the one who said to Jesus, "You are The Christ, son of the living God".
I was following the rulers as they led Jesus to be tried when the rooster crowed. I was the Apostle who said I would never deny Christ but denied him three times.* That's when Jesus looked at me, not with eyes of 'I told you so', but with his piercing eyes of love that I shall never forget.**
We've all heard the expression, 'If looks could kill', and some have witnessed 'that look' but have lived to tell the story about that so-called killing look. The look that Jesus gave me was one that could not kill or leave me guilty and hopeless, but one that generated penetrating love and created 'Resurrection life' within me. Such a look did not drive me away from, but 'to Christ'.
I am sorry for our friend Judas who never recovered from his betrayal. We both felt sorrow and deep contrition for what we had done, but emotion without repentance wasn't enough to restore him.
