THE HAUNTED HOUSE
At the end of the lane it stood in shambles
I decided to enter to see what's inside
I walked through the door - it slammed behind me
Scared me so bad, I thought I had died
That's when I saw this apparition
Coming toward me with a terrible grin
I felt faint and thought I'd swoon
As I watched the drool drip from his chin
Then he laughed -- what a horrible sound
My heart was racing at an alarming pace
I wanted to run as fast as I could
And get far away from this place
That's when he spoke in a raspy voice
He told me I needn't be afraid
No harm would come to me
If I would stay and become his maid
He told me he had waited a very long time
For someone like me to come his way
He promised me great riches
If I would agree to stay
I thought to myself, what must I do
To get out of the mess I was in
And then a plan occurred to me
So I just asked him when
When do I start in my new job
And take care of you and this place
He answered and said immediately
And a look of joy graced his face
I felt a rush of sadness for him
He seemed so grateful somehow
I saw the furrows that marred his face
Disappear from his wrinkled brow
That was fifty years ago
The ghost has long since gone
There's a FOR SALE sign in the yard
And I have moved to Rome
