Let me pass under the tunnel of trees While shrouded in mist in tropical breeze. Let island mysteries slowly unfold As customs remain from centuries old. Let me rise up to the Pali so rare As I feel it's strong winds lash my long hair. Honor ancestral spirits that surround This beautiful 'aina and sacred ground. A place where spirits of dead still abide, Where a battle took place and suicide. A warning to those who visit at night, You'll meet with oddities causing great fright. Viewing stunning Kaneohe below Where with fierce tenacity trade winds blow, My view from Pali I'll never forget... That Time, too fleeting, I'll ever regret. © Connie Marcum Wong Nuuanu Pali: “This is the last major battle that Kamehameha fought. This united all of the islands other than Kaua‘i, and, from this point on, for the next 20-some odd years, there was peace, other than the preparation for the battle of Kaua‘i.” Kaua‘i ceded its sovereignty peacefully to Kamehameha in 1806, without that battle ever occurring.

Thank you very much Lynn. There are many happenings here in Hawaii that cannot be explained away, like the night marchers. Hawaiians are very respectful of the spirits and I am too. I'm glad you enjoyed this poem so much. Hugs, Connie

An ode to poetry and to the Hawaiian history history your poem is dear, Connie. Having spent two months in Hawaiian Islands had the opportunity to familiarise myself with their history. The statute of Kamehameha in Honolulu next to father Damien's statute is very impressive. A 7 !

Thank you Chris. The Pali is a place that haunts you to return. My husband went there with a couple of friends one night because he didn't believe in the stories that were told. He heard chanting and his car died and wouldn't start. All the guys became afraid. They offered a rock covered by a ti leaf and then his car started and they were able to hurriedly leave. True story! ; )

Oh thank you so much for the fave Tim. A person tried to commit suicide there and the winds were so strong they lifted him back from his leap. It is an awesome place to experience. Mahalo, Connie : )

I think I'll play it safe and not go by day either, also too risky as I definitely don't want to wrap the stone with the wrong leaf. LOL

I would never go there at night after what my husband told me what happened to him and his friends. They drove up there one night and heard chanting and his car died and wouldn't start. They wrapped a rock and a ti leaf and gave it as an offering and then his car started and they hastily drove away. Mahalo Maria. : )
