The Emerging Storm
We danced out before the storm
my pups eager and worried
we walked in the rustling grasses
tree leaves whispering to the early winds
then the rushing air and the sky drumming
the crows watched cawing from the pines
the birds chirped and swore as the wind began to roar
the trees swayed and beat against each other limbs,
near the thundering waves of East Cliff Drive
the ocean whipped its greenish hue into white foam
there is thumping on the roof now
the birds grow quiet hiding in the bushes
and there is moaning, and the fearful snapping of the boughs
oh the howling winds
myself and the dogs now silent in the house
watching from the most distant space
