Its delicate wings no longer wet, it stretched well, And flew up high holding onlookers in its spell. Round and around it danced over the eerie pond All covered with water lilies but not beyond. Elation, euphoria, joy and disbelief, Emotions fell as it landed on fragrant leaf. Up again, its gossamer wings attaining strength, As once again it fluttered across the pond's length. Hungry it spied a tasty bug, gorged on its feed, Then instinct urged it to find its first mate to breed. The feat accomplished, it resumed its fullest flight Knowing full well it needed rest before twilight. Survival of the fittest it had never learned. Bird ate it up, that natural death it had earned.

The dragon fly was so excited about its flight, never knowing a cruel fate awaited it. Even though it is the story of just a fly, you have described it in such a way that it evokes pathos in the readers. Enjoyed reading this beautifully rhyming poem. Quite heartfelt narration, dear Victor.

Oh, that's so sad that it only lived for a day or so; still, by the sound of things, it managed to achieve a lot. I love dragonflies. There a lot around at the moment, especially near our swimming pool. A fave for me dear Victor, you've written a wonderful poem...Hugs

Such a well written sonnet dear Victor from your gifted pen. You have skilfully created wonderful imagery with the little dragonfly. The poem has great flow with great rhymes. Bit :( reading the concluding couplet with its ending of its life cycle but it was a beautiful read my friend. Blessings to you.

Loved this bittersweet tale, Victor. At least the dragonfly was able to feed and mate and to soar before death. This is a fave for me.

Sad that some bugs have such short lives in one way or another, but God knew what He was doing. Thank you for sharing this creative one with us. I enjoyed reading about the young dragonfly. Sara K

Ah, so sad. I feel sorry for it. You described its rewarding life so well, until it became some bird's lunch.

The mighty and the small all succumb to the same fate. Still those of us who witness the dragonfly in flight will collectively sigh. I enjoyed your poem very much.

Dear Victor, I adore your poem! This piece is exquisite, filled with beauty and dynamic imagery. The title is tempting and dramatic, I couldn't resist its pull. Your vivid imagery kept my mind's eye of your darting dragonfly till his demise. True to your verse, I felt the "elation, euphoria, joy and disbelief" - your golden pen is gifted indeed! Amazing poetry my friend. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

There is no denying the depth of the idea of survival of the fittest. The core of it is summed up by the turning twist in the end. Nature might seem merciless and brutal at times — A stunning poem, Victor.
