I wanted to share a beautiful moment with you all. It is what inspired the poem.

At work I am doing a project where I am tackling seasonal affective disorder and January blues. I am taking entertainers, who are doing it all for free, to places like nursing homes and hospices, where people feel isolated and lonely. Especially after the festive season.

On Monday 13 January, along with 5 excellent entertainers, 1 being an opera/classical singer, we went to a nursing home, where many suffer from dementia.

When the opera singer started to sing, a nurse brought a man in a wheelchair into the room, who was pointing and crying... He then started singing along to Ava Maria. It was a truly beautiful moment, which had many in tears, including him and the singer.

The man cannon communicate, but he communicated through singing. The song triggered something inside him and he communicated. He sang, he cried. I saw passion in his eyes.

I was told he used to be in a choir and is a trained singer.

How beautiful that music can do this to people.

At the end of the event, an lady called Sue, who had been with her husband, who has dementia came to me and thanked me. Sue said she never gets to spend quality time with her husband anymore and this was like a night out for them.... Sue also said John, let her hold his hand as well.

It was Sue who told me about someone being in a bubble, when they have Dementia.

I was over whelmed to say the least...

Sitting and gazing at the world through the window. Silence is broken with whistles of wind, rustling through lifeless leaves. As specks of rain trickle down panes of glass, charcoal clouds add to the misery of memories, slowly drifting away, like trees losing leaves. Petals of roses, you have forgotten, float along the garden path, you no longer know. A garage full of tools collecting dust, your cabriolet seems lost in stillness. Like me, they are things you used to love, but we are all obscure, as you seem secure in your bubble I try to show you light, but all you see is darkness. Forever we wander in the mist. My affection for you still lingers, as I look at you, but your blank expression looks through me. My intimate aroma remains anonymous, familiarity of my voice triggers no response. I would give up everything for you to recognise me, turn and look at me in your own special way, embrace me in your arms, watch me whilst I sleep but all your senses have become a stranger to me. Helplessly I watch, you waste away, as dementia gradually erases our memories. The pain burns a hole in my heart, which will never heal. If only you would turn around one last time, with an impression of love and smile at me, so I could see that special glint in your eyes and for you to tell me that you love me. What a meaningful poem rising from your real-world experience ... I hope to never succumb to such an existence (let alone witness it in those you love) ... but what a beauty you have mined from the tragedy. This is my second poem read today on this same topic (something in the air ... or coincidence?)

Having spent time as a patient (rehab) in a nursing home, I know whereof you speak... Heartbreaking places, without dementia, to be sure... At any rate, music is surely the window to the soul. I have found that extreme stutterers, as well as extremely learning disable kids, come alive through music (and sometimes even poetry!). Magic moments to be treasured! Great write, Silent! Cheers, Gershon

Many congratulations on POTW SO, it truly is an emotional write and sadly so many people suffer from Dementia. My dear sister in law is now in the final stages of Alzheimer's and is only 64 - it breaks my heart what this cruel disease has done to her and my dear brother and his family. I see her weekly and try to bring a smile to her face. I have written several poems on this evil disease. What you are doing is truly wonderful SO and I thank you. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

That is a really sweet and kind thing to say, however, there are many great poets who do free verse much better than me... Thank you..
