The Chill Factor

For a moment there winter seemed warm and inviting devoid of snow and just a gentle cold. Sitting by the fireplace the embers burned both red and hot enticing our bodies to draw it in. Hearts burned red as the fire with a lustful, passionate embrace. As the embers cooled and at last were dying, no longer reigniting all sense and feeling went away. Wind brushed angrily against frosty window panes and I heard no sadder song sung. Temperatures dropped as the snow blew in with unexpected chilling harshness. You dressed for the cold and in the dark slipped away as you hurriedly stepped outside. All warmth was drained by the wide open door as it's hinges creaked between the gusts. Ice crystals formed quickly along the edges of the frame as you closed it tightly behind you. A motor roared then raced along the drive and you drove along the path to disappear. No second thoughts, no long goodbyes your image faded in the distance and I knew You were gone for good this time, leaving me to my self delusions of love and face the harshness of the cold now inside. Lost to my own regrets but strong enough to survive the undeniable chill factor.
