The Cardinal and the Rose
My fingers crossed slowly over the old book
as I turned each page until I found the Rose
fragile and brown
its flattened petals crumbled when I touched it
a cutting for romance, long ago
placed in a book of pictured birds
her favorite was the Cardinale
pretty, red, majestic
a keepsake
to be looked at at a future time
in our age of shared memories
the Rose lost in time
the memory faded
the Cardinale's picture is still beautiful
the same as it was years ago
as I closed the book
a thought
could it have been the Rose
