The Bitter Knowing
The restricted fruit on Eden's first bough,
A hidden truth draped in deceptive sheen,
It promised wisdom, beckoning us now,
To break the bond where pure delight had been.
Not sweetness found, as other harvest gave,
But sharper sight, a world of right and wrong;
A sudden shame, no innocence could save,
Where simple joy had lingered for so long.
It cast mankind from comfort's gentle hold,
To face the thorns of labour and of pain;
A burdened mind by conscious choice grown old,
Beyond the gates to struggle in the rain.
Yet in that bite, a grace began to bloom,
To seek redemption from eternal gloom.
