S'Word Play
S’word Play
Have we become so frail
that we must take our pen
and go home because we can’t
get along with the other writers?
Must we throw tantrums
stomp our feet and scream
“Stop it! Stop it!”
“I’m gonna tell the teacher”
“Mom, Billy won’t play right!”
Is our self esteem so brittle
we must be encased in bubble rap
buoyed by fatuous praise
lest offense be taken
to a simple suggestion.
Could we not celebrate our eclecticism
allow each stone its rough edges
each gem its distinguishing facets
each word the power of the pen
to overcome the sword.
