Thomas Jefferson, a spokesman for democracy, was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President of the United States (1801–1809).  He is well known for his musical ability and was envied for his 6'2" height and a magnetic charm that made ladies swoon, especially when he played one of his three violins.

A Waltz with Thomas Jefferson
He is waiting the moment I open my eyes So erect he stands with an air of elegance I’m quick to notice his handsome face and tall size The Declaration’s author seems poised for romance A foot taller than I, he intimidates me Curiously, he brandishes a violin The polished instrument is but one of his three He eyes me, pulls the violin’s scroll from his chin He lays the violin down and extends his hand Tom’s smile reveals his lady’s man reputation He winks coyly, quite pleased to retire from the band I'm thrilled to waltz with a founder of our nation We step gaily about the colonial hall As Benjamin Franklin and John Adams look on Tom’s gentle hands lead me at the first Congress ball Envious are the expressions of Ben and John Tom sniffs the sweet yellow rose I placed in my hair Sadly, I release him when the band’s music ends You say I was dreaming, but I swear I was there Our thrilling, romantic waltz all logic transcends February 3, 2017

I love it when a poem includes facts about real characters from the past. It helps to keep their memory alive. I knew he was tall but I did not know that he could play the violin. This is a lovely tribute in a dreamlike scene that paints a pretty picture in the mind. It is sure to do well in the contest Carolyn. ; ) 7

Hi Connie, I learned a lot about our founding fathers when working on the musical play "1776." Jefferson's wife Martha tells Adams and Franklin it was Tom's violin that captured her heart. Thanks for reading.

I loved this Carolyn. I could see the lady and the President gliding across the floor in the romantic waltz of your dreams. Excellent as always. This is a winner for sure. God Bless and a 7 from me. JB

This would be enchanting w/o "Tom", with him it is simply marvelous. Such clear flow and admirably crafted rhyme. Seems several (well, actually this is just the 2nd) have chosen to dance with historical figures and I can't help but wonder who of us could actually do the dances that were in style at the time! I enjoyed your poem - you, Tom and the ball are part of a night to remember! All the best ... CayCay

Carolyn, I wrote mine a few days and have not posted it yet. Wait till you see who I wrote about. You and I are so much alike, (but it was not Jefferson) This is awesome!!

You put your imagination to excellent use, Carolyn. Truly romantic and musical. I'd like to ask you for the next waltz, but don't expect me to match Tom's height:) Hugs // paul

Who knows, Carolyn, possibly you were there in another incarnation. What waltz were they playing? You have such imagination. Love, Dave

Now that would be some night, Mrs Carolyn. Ranked by scholars as THE greatest president. A captivating read:)

That he was, Daniel. Did you know he tried to recognize the rights of African Americans while writing the Declaration? Representatives of several Southern states said they would not sign it, so he was forced to remove the language.

This was wonderful Carolyn. I looked at this contest but only ended up scratching my head. You on the other hand have mailed it. This was a fantastic theme, written amazingly and I felt I was there. Really nicely done. Good luck in the contest.
