Steampunk

Daniel Henry Rodgers

"Steampunk is a brass-geared rebellion of imagination, where steam-powered dreams conquer the impossible. It's not just cogs and clockwork, but a conscious map exploring the tensions between progress and ethics, individuality and authority, humanity and nature—all through the lens of a reimagined past."  -Daniel Henry Rodgers

================================

In the copper-clad cradle of time where gears whir fugues to forgotten dreams..... the fog—a somnolent specter—drifts..... veiling the calculus of progress a manuscript etched by steam and soot. Hark The hiss of pistons proclaims a triumph—or perhaps a dirge— for we have harnessed Hephaestus’ fire yet grasped not his wisdom. Verne's visions chart the oceans of steam while Shelley weeps for monsters born in greed Wells' chariots defy the fleeting hours their rumbles ricocheting through brass corridors. Brass angels riveted wings spread wide ascend like Icarus drunk on invention their cogwork hearts pulsing with hubris surging with the fever of creation. Here the air is stitched with oil and ash clockfaces leer with fractured vacant grins while shadows of chimney spires skeletal claws tear at skies choked with embered despair. Do you hear it The metronome relentless beat a pendulum slicing through epochs tick-tock tick-tock splintering past and future into scraps of a fragmented now. The machinist stands cloaked in copper dreams an oracle of smoke and flame her hands deft and defiant weld veins of brass and arteries of iron animating the lifeblood of her creations yet her gaze—a blend of pride and pain— knows each cog she crafts is tethered to the loom of greed a blueprint drawn with imperial precision. Westerfeld scrawled rebellion in smoky tendrils. Carriger's parasols slice through soot-streaked skies. Tim Powers brews sorcery in shadowed gears while Cherie Priest breathes life into ironclad ghosts. How thin the mantle between craft and craftiness— between the artisan's love and the industry's hunger. Is this ingenuity or insolence..... the loom of history whirs with questions unanswered yet unyielding. Oh progress your song is a riddle— a clockwork paradox spinning dials of doubt. philosophers etch you in smoke. sociologists scrawl in soot. your tale-a-chain of unbroken links. forged in fire cooled in blood. Still the sky mourns its lost horizon and yet—and yet— we build zeppelins from dreams dirigibles of daring navigating not just air but the soul's vast ether here where fashion is armor and goggles are windows to sepia-tinted truths we revel in anachronisms that ignite the dying embers of wonder. VanderMeer envisions ecosystems in clockwork a jungle of gears where life defies decay Steampunk thou art a cantata of contradictions— a rebellion against sterile progress a requiem for forgotten artisans a clocktower's penumbra pointing both forward and back. Oh iron-wrought Pegasus rise from this haze your wings brass-plated and unbroken teach us to dance once more on the edge of chaos and craft where sparks kiss the cheek of creation and the future rhythms in retrograde harmony. Let this chorus endure—clockwork and eternal— an anthem for dreamers for builders for all who believe the past's rivets can brace the future's brittle spine Tick-tock tick-tock— the paradox chimes on perpetually.

The title, Steampunk, is perfect for artistry of the machine age. I love this poem. Metal sculptures are very popular.

Your poem is laden with allusions to Mythological figures like Hephaestus, Icarus, Pegasus and writers like Shelley which make this poem highly erudite which only a man of wide reading can comprehend. In this world of advanced technology, can steampunk be a match, I truly wonder. I don't know what to comment, but wish to reiterate that your learning and poetic prowess are simply awesome. Also your knowledge of technology and every branch of art and learning. Wish you a Happy week ahead, dear Daniel.

Daniel, you pull in a lot of allusions and they add to the complexity of this work and what it describes. The progress is not so different from what we have now...you just take the hidden and make it visible. The emotions and pitfalls are much the same today. With steampunk, it's much easier to see the crazy effects that might seem undesirable. Of course, I would equate these to my favorite obsession (negative externalities). It's amazing how we have to temper what we dream about. Not easy as we know ethics never are.

Hello Duke, thank you for your thoughtful reflection and you're spot on about making the hidden visible. It's fascinating how steampunk exaggerates the consequences of progress, making those “negative externalities” impossible to ignore. Balancing dreams with ethics is indeed a challenge, but one worth engaging in. Always grateful for your thoughtful reflections Winter Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

I love music terms melding along with the history of ingenuity of the steampunk genre and mythology infusions for electric poetry. Scolding progress, as I read on and I enjoy the words I had to look up, new to me. Without throwing your lines I love best back at you, I will just say Masterpiece!

Daniel, your poem is fantastic. It delves into the difficult link between technological advancement and its repercussions, particularly in the setting of the steampunk aesthetic. It considers the dual nature of invention, applauding human inventiveness while mourning the effects of industrialization and the loss of wisdom. Your word choice is rich and expressive, combining technical and lyrical language. Words like "copper-clad," "pistons," and "brass angels" accentuate the steampunk aesthetic, yet terms like "smoky tendrils" and "embed despair" elicit feelings of nostalgia and loss.

I most certainly haven’t been punk’d here Daniel, (or have I) what a fabulous write full of imagery and spot on allusion, the metronome line seemed to have a subliminal influence on this reader (have you secretly been hypnotising your audience) because I feel strangely compelled to fave this one, lol! it’s a wonderful tour de force and deserves all the accolades it receives, a well earned Fave, cheers David

Hello David, LOL! First let me say thanks so much for your amazing feedback! I'm thrilled you enjoyed the imagery and allusions and that the swinging metronome caught your attention, though I can’t claim to have hypnotized anyone on PS! Although, as a MH counselor, I use hypnosis in my practice. Your kind words and the “fave” truly make my day. Listen you will soon find yourself quacking like a duck. Dear Nette, I truly appreciate your comments. Yes, Jules Verne, HG Wells, and Mary Shelley were more of the 19th-century writers, where most of the others are more current. It was a fun exploratory adventure. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Looks like Sci fi here. I did not know any of the names you referred to in the poem, but when I looked them up, I could see they were inventive writers. Seems a clever work you have come up with.

Dear Andrea, Thank you and yes steampunk was born out of the scifi world. Some of the writers are well known and others not as much unless you are into the steampunk subculture. I guess that I found it interesting and have been wanting to write a poem about it for several years. It is always a pleasure to see your comments. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Dear Sara, I came out of the hi-tech world starting in 1975 and lived through so much technological growth. I have always enjoyed the tech world but I know that our Lord wants us to have a relationship with him and others. Sometimes tech gets in the way of that. It is both scary and exciting and can be used for good and yes for bad. Thanks for stopping by, Sara. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Daniel, I read this twice and will fave it to read again, for no two times over can reveal every worthwhile thought you've poured into your lines. Using the works of other writers was a genius thought. In a world built of copper, brass, iron, etc, forged on the need for greed, I would feel deprived of nature. Living in a chaotic world of oil and ash? I'd have to pull the hands off the tick tock. I'll have to pass on that, but never on reading your poetry. I'm sending you soup mail in a bit.

Dear Lin, I think the greatest complement that a poet can get is when somebody reads through it more than once and receives new insights each time. My friends always know that I am somewhat of an egghead since I am constantly reading. Last year I finished 88 books. It is a mix of classics, history, fiction, nonfiction, bios, self-help, poetry, etc. Several years ago I started exploring steampunk and learned so much about this subculture that, in many ways, is a fascinating view of life. Thanks, Lin, for stopping by!! - Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

The thread I see running through this masterpiece is the paradox of progress and the lust and greed it inspires in the hearts of capitalists who see only profit and exploitation in every new endeavor. Such is the Devil's world. Under Christ's millennial reign any new technology/inventions will only be used for the good of mankind and the planet, and will be equally available to everyone

Hello Tom, Several years ago I became interested in the idea of steampunk and realized how it is truly a rebellion against the future of tech and where it may lead us. A great book to read is The Anxious Generation for it shows how tech is changing the brains of the X-Gen and A-Gen, some for the good and most not so good. Obvious technology in of itself can be very good and it is all based on the use. I think about Oppenheimer and his regrets. Yes, when Christ returns, it will no longer matter. Winter Blessings, My Friend, Daniel
