Spring Daffodils
Oh! Behold
The bliss and beauty of spring
The warm sunbeams, the sudden showers,
The husky wind, neither swift nor soft
The verdure of shrubs that puts forth their buds
And their sweet fragrance
When opening their delicate folds.
Lo! That cluster of daffodils over the hedge,
The brightest flowers of early spring
Popping out of the hard crust of the earth
Announcing that spring is at our doorstep
With yellow crowns, they are regal heirs
Poised on green stems amid long slender leaves
Seen in gregarious groups, never as loners
Sometimes stretch for miles, offering a visual treat
As the dappled sunlight filters through the clouds
They swing and dance in merriment in the hazy light
Amid a circling layer of petals, each flower holds a cup
A wine filled goblet, for bees and butterflies to sip
As if they are blooming to feed those winged fairies
Each leaf, each bloom and each blade of grass
Of the verdant spring assures us of fresh beginnings
But nothing can so delight us like the daffodils
That used to haunt and tickle the fancy
Of the great English bard of Cockermouth
Whenever he sat sad or in pensive mood
