Song of a Protestor

Sonnet: SONG OF A PROTESTOR How sweet to have a conscience that is clear Can laud myself for righteousness conspicuous Support all worthy politics, no fear That I’d be charged as fascist, avaricious Equality and fairness are my watchwords You’ve more than me? I’ll be like Robin of Locksley I’ll take from you, imprimatur conferred With government empowered as my proxy If it’s green and peaceful then it must be noble Never mind that it removes your free volition We know what’s best for all, and with power global We’ll have no strife, just placid full submission Disagree with me? I won’t ask you on what basis For I know the reason is: you’re a bigoted racist

Yes, I enjoyed this - informative with dry humor (some might say sarcasm). "We know what's best for all..." is often said or implied and is the height of arrogance IMHO. Your explanation at the top is well stated and reasonable, and of course I wasn't expecting the last line and had to laugh. So true... Well done!

I have more opinion. The educated and talented among folks are worth more to society, and should earn more accordingly. However, the people striking it rich through lucky investments should not be entitled to control the world's resources. It's about right that half their income is re-distributed.

With cheap labor and 12-hour work shifts (they don't mind from overseas), more profit is earned, and more is retained after taxes.

Answer: No, not half. But there needs to be some re-distribution. Law and order is expensive. Whoever prefers anarchy could get rich in South America, and then killed. Some socialism is to everyone's benefit, because disgruntled-masses is a scary thing. Remember the French Revolution? The solution to the economy is to import CHEAP labor, as guests. (2). People should NOT be reimbursed through unlucky investments. There's food stamps for them in the meantime.

Thanks for both of your comments, Hannah. What about those who provide a valuable product by their skill, work and courage? Should they have half of what they received in free exchange, taken away by force? And should those who lost in unlucky investments be reimbursed by others? Regards Geoffrey

Your poems are more than talent; they're also intelligent. As far as the topic, in my opinion, no one movement is utopian. A recipe for a perfect society contains the positive aspects of each ideal: a measure of capitalism plus a measure of socialism; a lot of democracy plus a lot of law and order; humanism plus a measure of nationalism; etc.

Enjoyed, Geoffrey. I always appreciate true political poetry from either side. Some is only rambling. Yours is good!
