She swayed with her head hung over The buggy that clanked down the street And I wondered...the will that drove her As she walked without lifting her feet Pushing...her tattered life in a kart Her eyes fixed...in a frozen stare Was she the beat of a broken heart Soul lost...but she didn't know where Somehow...she looked familiar to me Yes!..vaguely like someone’s mother A hint...of what she used to be Or the sister of someone’s brother Surely...she once belonged to someone And I couldn’t help ask myself why Her life had become completely undone As despair... spilled out of her eyes February 15, 2020] Author: Elaine Cecelia George of Canada

This is a magnificent poem, Elaine. I hate to see so many homeless people. I wrote one about them many years ago. We both wonder the same things...

I turned off notification to replies to me so I finally am just now seeing how you told me about your short stories and novels. Have you had any success with them? I would love to be the woman who wrote Twilght and got filthy rich off the movies made from it!!

Hi, Andrea, I am still working on my novels...such a challenge. However, I had great success with my stage play. I hope to complete my novel (Out of the darkness) sometime within the next 6 months. It is a very time consuming task and it seems there are not enough hours in the day . lol!

I found this to be a wonderfully sad poem. One that highlights some of the oft unseen tragedies in life. Closing verse perfect and so meaningful in its enlightenment. A FAV, A TRUE GEM TOO.. God bless...

I am deeply touched by this poem, Elaine. I have come across similar people, and feel the urge to reach out to them, but the fear of intruding in their life always holds me back. ~ Hope you are keeping as far away as possible from the virus! Stay safe. Warm regards // paul

This is deeply touching with great imagery and expression. I could see her walking aimlessly through the street. So sad and all too real. Well done. God Bless, JB

We've probably all had this experience once...to think you recognize someone whose life is the street...I've never been sure. I like the 2nd stanza especially.

oh my, such a sad one. LIke Nina says down here, it truly could happen to any of us. If all our relatives were gone, what could we do if bad luck befell us? I really like seeing you here and writing again. Thanks for your words to me on my anniversary poem. It had not even occurred to me how close I was to a decade here until I thought about doing that challenge!

Hi, Andrea...Thank you for stopping by...and...for your comments...most appreciated. The first poem I posted here was in February of 2006. Although I am more into writing short stories now...and still working on my novels, I from time to time am drawn back to my first love of poetry.

Strong work! Most frequently, people on the street have some sort of mental illness, and if that's not a lost soul, I don't know what IS! Really a compelling piece, piercing ignorance and awakening the numbed mind. Thank You!

A somber portrait of real someone..somebody's mother, or sister as you say. Quite touching Elaine..you gave voice to many whose lives have been undone just the way you describe. You always write great poems.
