Keepsake

When you left home, you gave back to me the picture I’d given you for christmas the one that I thought you would enjoy having as a keepsake of you and me It was the one of me with my arm around you I was so proud of my fourteen year old boy You said, “I don’t need this.” Perhaps you meant nothing by it but it broke my heart a little bit April 26, 2018 Submitted 9/12/2021 for the '''K'' Contest, New or Old' Poetry Contest Sponsor: Constance La France

Congratulations on your win, Andrea. I can understand your feelings, but he was only fourteen year old - some day he will realize how parents feel about small things or gestures about their children. You are a great Mom! Love and BW ~ Mala

In that moment, he was 18. Now he is 41 and still he has not learned. Ahhhh, what can I say.? I do know he loves me, however.

Great depiction of that clueless youthful insensitivity. We don't mean to be thoughtless at that age. But some of us, I guess are just so caught up in life that we aren't paying attention to these things. I bet he would want it now. :)

I know the feeling but I think it was in that it means more to us than to them and we might like it to look at more than they would. I kept all the kids school work and report cards thinking they might like to see it when they grew up. nope. I got rid of it all in nice big bond fire. love phyl

How sad, Andrea. He probably just wanted you to hold onto it for safe keeping, but the words came out wrong. Very moving, my friend. Love, carolyn

No , this really is my son. No gifts or cards do I get either (I think he does not get away with that where his wife is concerned. haha). I know he loves me. He is just very different but I am glad that he got his independence from me and Joe and also he got his smarts at least from one of his parents because it landed him the DA job!!

Andrea, this is an accurate portrayal of REAL LIFE. Nicely put! And we have all been there. My 12 year old daughter would ask me to park beside the Middle school, and she would slither out from the floor of the backseat; she was so ready to claim me as not her mother, so compared to this, you are good!

sorry about that, Caren. Some kids don't even try to remember the good stuff from their childhood!
