Two more examples for the Anacreontic verse contest.

Silent parade was written using rhyme, normally it is not in rhymes, but I wanted to try to get a good flow to it.

April showers is in the original form.

Anyone who is writing for the contest, please remember it does not have to be five syllables per line, it can be between three and five.

Anacreontic verse is an Ancient Greek lyrical form, consisting of 20- to 30-
line poems with three to five syllables per line. Developed by 6th century B.C. poet Anacreon. A form that emerged during the height of the dramatic, musical,
artistic, and poetic culture. The poems revolved around themes of love,
infatuation, revelry, festivals, and observations of everyday life.

Silent Parade - Anacreontic Verse

He curses sunrise,
it starts his demise.
He lies in bed,
wishing he was dead.
As somber thoughts creep,
they hurt him too deep,
he just wants to weep
and forever sleep.
His mind's gone berserk,
as the pills don't work.
He tries to explain,
but it's all in vain,
so he becomes tense,
when thoughts make no sense.
What's the point of life,
when its full of strife.
If they wore his shoes,
they would see the clues,
that his heart's breaking
and see he's faking.
He just pretends,
to not worry friends.
It's easy to blend,
so it won't offend.
As he can't engross,
in his dark morose.
He puts on a smile.
it's his mastered guile.
A forced masquerade -
his silent parade.

"April Showers Bring May Flowers" - Anacreontic Verse

Rain perspires into
mild petrichor scents
as a radiant
rainbow appears
Bluebirds bellow
sweet melodies
with saffron sun
glistening amid
blonde daffodils
blooming among
soft scarlet pansies
Tepid perfumed air
drifts fragrant flavours
from lilac lilies
and velvet orchids
Colourful primrose
sparkle like jewels
Bucolic views bring
childhood reminders
of playing in
emerald meadows
Hiding in cornfields
and building scarecrows
Horizons turn grey
as timid sun hides
behind dull rain-clouds
Seasons change with
contrasting weather
but memories
always remain

I love both of your poems. The first one, is very deep, there are many of us that relate far too well. The second, oh my goodness, so joyful.. The two poems posted together reminded me of 'The Logical Song' from the 1970's. The song reminisces of the beauty and wonder of childhood, and then being taught to be 'logical'. It's different but similar in a way. I love both of your poems. The second one took me back to a childhood memory of hearing the songs of birds, and breathing the sea breeze.

oh wow, I see they can also be rhymed!! I already did mine (though have not posted it yet) and I kind of wish I had known we could rhyme them, but anyway, I think the free verse ones I have been seeing on Soup seem a bit more sophisticated. This is really good form you have introduced by way of your contest. Thanks for your recent remarks on my poetry!

Hi S.O. Great work, as usual. I, of course, prefer the rhyming version. I love the sound of rhyming words, it's so much like a song. Your imagery poem is also a delight though. You've used both sight and sound well. So, how have you been? I just came back to check on my favorites and to read some new poems. I'm still writing and posting only occasionally. Listed one new poem to keep my feed fresh. Take care, my friend. - Jan

What a contrast! The first poem applies to many, who are in denial trying to convey that everything is fine. The second one with colorful imagery reminding us of beautiful memories. Thank you for these masterpieces.

These are excellent examples. I think the Silent Parade could speak for many people out there, who are putting on that cover smile. I enjoyed the rhyming in it too, but both are great poems that I enjoyed. Your poetry is so meaningful and nice to read here again. Have a nice day, my friend :)

I like the vibrancy of the second poem and its joyous tenor. I thought you achieved the rhythm without using rhymes (something I like to do). The silent parade of the first echoes in melancholy--well done, SO.
