Show Me a Sign

I heard God praying to me. I heard Her sigh. Childlike She seemed, Her prayers both timid and fierce; longing and doubt were also there where a hint of a sob broke through. I wanted to reveal myself to Her, so that She could see Herself in me. “Show me a sign,” She cried, “anything, show me, don't just tell me.” Later that night under my window, two cats were going at it, fighting or having sex - hard to tell. God and I listened to the caterwauling, our prayers put aside, while we both twisted shadows into blood-red candles of hope.
