Shoe Box

Wardrobe top shelf, a place of dust and darkness
Sitting there in such sadness.
Time to visit memories waiting there
Words and feelings shared without care.
A shoe box, full of treasures letters and treason
Brought into daylight, secrets, reasons.
Lid is opened, just as in times before
Letters written to loved ones, letters returned unread
Others are full of memories of those we knew as friends
Some are read with laughter, some are full of jokes
Others are filled with words of love and praise
Sparking our thoughts of those that wrote
Some are not legible, not through faults of their own
Eyes are full of sadness tears, memories of those now gone
Words cannot be seen through tears that flow
Tears fall onto dusty letter pages
As many have done before
If only there had been understanding
Words that were misunderstood
letters returned full of love and praise
I love you, that line often misunderstood
Memories now flowing in front of me
The daylight hours are turning dim, my eyes close in sleep
I awake in darkness, just as many times before
Letters, memories, scattered at my feet, waiting to go back home
All picked up and back in the shoe box
Top shelf darkness, waits for their return
I say a few words of kindness, my memories whisper, we care.

Hi Laura, these memories were unearthed after a request to tidy up the office wardrobe. I looked at this box for several moments before removing the lid.

Such a brilliant concept. Great imagery. So may people can relate to your poem. So many shoe boxes housing family treasures, and secrets.
