She Did Not Recognize Herself
The pretty bird was getting a scolding of a lifetime
My neighbor called me to look out.
It was funny.
At first.
The limb did not move.
He acted unruffled.
Was this scolding his usual fodder?
Was this his mate?
My neighbor phoned me.
Can you believe it? She asked.
I could. I had seen her do this with her own husband.
No, I lied. Hard to believe.
She got off the phone
Said to her husband,
“You were right.
She did not recognize herself.”
