Halloween Sonnet It's Halloween, that spooky time of year, when scary monsters prowl the streets at night, those freaky ghouls make me shiver with fear, in costumes that give me a dreadful fright! Pumpkin lanterns cast a dire, eerie glow as eager children arrive at my door; Candy offerings on them, I bestow, while their excited eyes say, 'Give me more!' Sometimes older ones take it much too far, playing mean tricks when they don't get a treat. I'll find eggs splattered on my house and car, and hear bad language I dare not repeat! Children celebrate on this festive day and dress as specters who've come out to play! checked with how many syllables Shakespearean Sonnet (with Prizes) Contest Sponsored by Carolyn Devonshire Ring size 7 I think favorite color for gems Green or Purple 10/14/18

Hawaii celebrates this holiday big time Jan. A trip to Waikiki is delightful, people watching while the atmosphere takes on a carnival feeling. I enjoyed your poem. So happy to see it on the winner's list. Congratulations! : )

Your images of Halloween tell me the holiday is celebrated in Europe much as it is in the U.S. Beautifully written, Jan. Congratulations on your win in a highly competitive contest. Hugs, Carolyn

Well written sonnet on the holiday theme Jan. Not a big fan, as you say older kids take it too far , must be frigtening for the elderly and folk on their own. I'm away again at Bluestone in Wales be nice to stay at home for a few days lol. Hope alls well. Tom.

I think that you have at least given the Bard a chuckle,...if not a run for his money! Certainly enjoyed this one, Jan! Best wishes, Gershon

Excellent sonnet, Jan! You're right. Some people--those who like to do mean things--see Halloween as an opportunity to let loose! Janice

Hi Jan, such a creative, imaginative write, and in the sonnet form as well. I love the imagery, I always love watching the kids enjoying themselves. An excellent, descriptive write which I hope does well in the contest. Good luck with this wonderful sonnet. Have a wonderful Sunday. Hugs....Mike. XX. A sonnet worthy of a fave Jan. Halloween fun.

Thanks Mike:-)I don't really enjoy the writing sonnet form (having been bullied by a self professed 'expert' in my early days at soup) however I am getting a little more confident in writing the form now but I still prefer to write limericks any day lol:-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks Ilene:-) I don't really enjoy Halloween (in the Isle of Man it's called Hop Tu Naa) We have been on holiday the last 5 years so the poem is written on observation - the throwing of eggs and flour is something I read about its not something that has happened in our area:-) hugs Jan xx
