Notes About The Poem

Science Fiction

Some inventors and scientists, they have both said
That science fiction books put ideas in their head
A novel that was written by Arthur C Clarke
Gave Tim Berners Lee the necessary spark.

The communicator in Star Trek that was fantasy
Martin Cooper of Motorola made it reality.
Beam me up Scotty, well that’s not here yet
Research is being done and they’ll crack it, you bet.

The news pads from the movie 2001
Now everyone has a tablet for online fun
Remember talking HAL, I’m sure you all do
Computer giants researched it and made it come true.

The movie Dick Tracy where they talk on their wrist
Now the smart watch is another to add to that list
Men dressed as robots in old movies you see
Now robots build cars, no longer fantasy.

Artificial intelligence now it can change your life
Any shape any colour, you can have one as your wife
But research and tech gadgets, are we moving too fast?
Mankind might become just a thing of the past.

Take for example a factory with two hundred men
Now all you need is a robot and a workforce of ten
But it’s not something new, just look at history
Job loss came with the intro of the Spinning Jenny.

Ray guns and flying saucers at area 51
They try to tell you that nothing is going on
No need to panic it’s a research facility
Whilst making space age weapons for the military.

And films have inspired the creation of drones
Controlled very easily from an app on your phones
X-Ray drones are the ones that bother me
Wear a swimsuit in the shower because they will see.

Robots that can think will outwit us one day
We’ll just be a nuisance and be put out of the way
Science fiction for many is just fantasy
But it inspires the great minds in creativity.

Oh, my goodness, Tom. 6 years ahead of today and you were writing about AI. It did and does inspire great minds and societies have gained many things from its advancements. Currently, we're experiencing the negative side of it with some humans passing off poetry as their own when it's the work of robots.

Thank you very much Lin, you're so right, there's always a negative side as we're seeing now. Wars too bring new inventions, sadly for destruction. Mankind is too clever for his own good. Tom

Congratulations on your win! I enjoyed this one very much and certainly find it all too much for me. You can't make stuff up anymore hardly, reality has passed fiction almost. A good write!

Tom, I thoroughly enjoyed your poem, since I am so interested in this subject. Yes, the fact that so many of our 'science fiction visions' have become reality, makes one wonder if we are being 'steered'. Very well-written! Sandra

Great, profound writing! There's nothing anyone really invents. What we do is, make our minds ready, through thought and physical relationship, to accept Divine-spark from spirit-archetypes already in the mind of Creation. Anything we think, can become a physical reality. It is already invented. As you say: great possibilities, and great horrors. We need to guard our thoughts--they are never innocuous. We could not think it, if it were not already real substance on the plane of inspiration.

Thank you Joe, love your comments. One thing I often think of is how the earth was a few hundred years ago with forests, lakes, rocks, etc ,and you look around and see Jets, cars, computers, the list is endless and as you say it was always here.Just needs a brilliant mind to discover it.

Love your observations about they way science has taken over our lives in such an invasive way, Tom. Great job, and good luck in the contest:)

Thank you Laura, It certainly has. Some for the better but I wonder do we rely on it too much. The computer was down at our local supermarket so they had to close as they couldn't function without it. It would have never happened years ago.

I love this one! One of my favorite things to do at the used bookstore where I work is look at old ads and think of how technology has changed, yet somehow we haven't changed much at all.

Thank you Amy, When I was an air cadet they took us into a room to show us the computer, the room was the computer, big cabinets and flashing lights with a typewriter in a glass case in the middle, and now they fit in the palm of your hand.yes, your right we are still much the same.

It is a scary reality, and human needs to be careful before it creates something that destroys humanity.... Great entry for the contest..

- You're right, it's not a fantasy anymore - some of it is really amazing ... but, most of it scares me - What happens to humans ... should they be recycled or simply thrown into the trash ... (?) ... - An interesting writing, Tom - Best wishes in the contest :) - hugs // Anne-Lise :)
