Schmutz

My husband said my pants had schmutz Perhaps from when I sat Upon a bench with residue From when a pigeon shat. For anyone who doesn’t know The word or else its meaning, It’s Yiddish and it translates to Some dirt requiring cleaning. You can have schmutz on clothes Or even schmutz upon your face. A floor with lots of schmutz might be Considered a disgrace. Just listen to the sound of “schmutz” - It’s plain its definition Reflects a negativity In some nearby condition.

There's also the German word "schmutzig" and "dreckig" both mean dirty but dreckig is stronger as in muck. I love foreign language words! / Maurice

when my daughter was born, her Jewish doctor said she had some schmutz in her sinuses, but it was natural and wouldn't last too long... it was my first time hearing the word and i've never forgotten it. great word, great poem!

Ha ha Ilene. No schmutz on your poetry though! Very cleverly written. Linda

Marvelous word, Ilene. I hate it when I put on what I think is a clean shirt only to discover my washers inadequacies. It has schmutz on it!

At least 'shmutz' doesn't rhyme with 'putz.' ~ Mr. Grammar Man (lol)

I believe there is another Yiddish word with the same meaning: it is "drek". Good write as usual, Ilene.

I have just learned a new word, thanks to you, Ilene! I suppose it also refers to the muck left next to my doorstep by a dog and his inconsiderate master! ~ Regards // paul
