Rooms By the Sea - Edward Hopper

Inspired by Rooms By the Sea by Edward Hopper. Obscure the eyes provide more to feel The energy from the ocean meets zeal My mind expands within this space Literal and figurative jumping off place Symmetry and familiar shafts of light Conscious and subconscious brain ignite All expectations met by sea view Immersion of soul into the vast blue Solitude, a place to think Consider boundaries or push the brink Simple rooms, sparse, by the sea Contained within, is all of me Space to breath and contemplate Introspect and vision infiltrate Compartmentalise light and shade Here in my haven, art is made

Fb seems to be in cahoots with you. The History of Art Group shared this article earlier this week, hence me commenting on your excellent poem earlier (I only got round to it now to share it): Edward Hopper: 100 Famous Paintings, Biography, and Quotes

And I learned from you as well, DD. Knowledge by osmosis, and inspiration by your poetry. :)

Believe it or not Suzette, all but the most well known paintings I have never seen or heard of before I attempt the ekphrasis. I find the painting, research what is available to know about it and the artist and the period of time it's painted and decide whether I'll be factual or just go my own way. It's completely a learning journey for me :)

A lot to take in... worth the effort in every line as you have captured the imagery, mood and breath. Have hovered in the space you created ...enjoyed,

Thank you very much. I think the paintings that require more of the mind to capture your attention are the most fun to do for ekphrasis. They aren't the painting, they are emotion and intent captured in time.

Hopper's artistic depiction of silence and solitude beautifully described through your words. Cheers - Gary

Thanks Gary, I give myself a little pat on the back when I get a nod of approval from yourself :) I appreciate you having a read and taking the time to comment

Just an aside: It would be interesting if you could add where the original art piece is currently residing. A Google search brought to light that the original is at Yale University National Gallery. And it has more depth than the reproduction I viewed earlier.

Fascinating - there's the provenance on there too!

I'll check that out. With a few of these I've found the location unreliable as things can get out of date so I wasn't sure whether to trust the detail. It also varies on my mood, sometimes I describe the picture above the poem but lately I decided anyone interested would look it up haha. Glad it did catch your interest!

Now that is what I would call art on art. Love this! I like the way Hopper used the angular aspect of light (usually found in shadows) to draw the eye into the painting - even the light in the room behind the mainframe suggests a window through which light is freely streaming. The impossible contrast of the white walls and the blue of the sea is reminiscent of Santorini. I love the emotional impact of your poem.

Thank you very much Suzette. Cheeky Greece claiming blue and white as their signature colours - I know what you mean though. Thank you for your enthusiastic and kind words in response to my poem - much appreciated :)
