Rambling About Punctuation

Someone asked me for some punctuation advice I’m not an expert on requirements, as such, I thought for them to ask me was rather nice No two poets will agree on punctuating much. In poetry, a comma is a pause in the action A breather, so to speak, at the end of a line, While a period means to stop for a reaction Dashes mean more to come, which is fine. Sometimes, no punctuation is necessary I’m inclined to believe less is better than more Poetry is different from prose; not to be contrary I threw in a semi-colon, rarely used, for sure. Overuse of exclamation points is a no-no vice For they are appropriate only when exclaiming, Sometimes they’re like yelling, which isn’t nice While brackets [ ] or ( ) are used for explaining Or, setting apart something you want to convey Dashes are fine if used sparingly, like dot, dot, dot A colon is used before a list you want to display Honestly, I’d rather see less punctuation than a lot. I hope this is helpful as you develop your style I’d recommend a guide for general purposes, But being too strict stifles creativity in a while I say do your own thing instead of what imposes.

Oh wow, I use ! too much and it is for yelling out, didn't think to [ ] or ( ) are used for explaining. I thought brackets were for math [ ] only. Thanks again Milt, I'm listening!

That, too, Anaya. But, in poetry, they generally break the train of thought with extraneous or explanatory information. Love your comment!

I do not think anyone agrees with anyone else on punctuation; I know that many never use it at all. I wish I was more like those poets.

Me, too, Caren. I wouldn't mind if all punctuation was barred from poetry!

Believe it or not, Milton, I wrote a succinct two liner on punctuation a few days ago: The purpose of all punctuality / is to give meaning clarity. You did a good job on ex-laining the different kinds of punctuality. And I agree with you – at least in poetry – the less the better. / Maurice

Thanks, Shirley. I hope it will be helpful to some who have not had a lot of English training. Punctuation should never stifle creativity or self-expression, in my opinion.

W-H*A:T DO! Y,O;U) M/E:A-N!!! Really though, having started dabbling in poetry only 5 months ago, this is very helpful (meaningful non-yelling exclamation point here). Thank you! :-) Becky

(chuckling) Thanks, Becky. Remember, don't stifle your creativity, whatever. Less is always better than more in punctuating.
