though at a phonecall’s reach
everyone is miles away
it’s been this way since I was sixteen
alone in a big city
making a living on my own
alone and detached from everyone
some people call it freedom
I often think I’m tired of it all
I miss my family my cousins and everyone
I long for the years I missed
the structure the network of caring
the challenge of measuring up
of building something worthwhile
the direction the standards the ideals
freedom isn’t all it’s cranked up to be
