Picture from the Manx I museum

The cottage in the picture is a traditional manx stone cottage and there is a 'living museum' at a village called Cregneash which is open to the public

THE SALTY SEA DOG My late uncle spent many years at sea I can still recall every single line on his aging face His weather beaten skin had a patina built up from exposure to the elements, it reminded me of tanned dark mahogany leather Those piercing blue eyes, still as bright as the sunshine would hold my gaze as he told me tales of his adventures He passed away many years ago but he instilled in me a love and respect for the sea which remains to this very day Fiction write Patina Contest Sponsored by Anthony Slausen July 1st 2018

I also had a great granddad lost at sea, Jan, Being he was a trawlerman base in Grimsby. this poem although being fiction epitomises real life. You have created a wonderful poem, good luck in the contest.

Aww it is such a dangerous way to make a living Harry, I can still recall in 2000 there was a trawler' the solway harvester' lost off the Isle of Man 7 crew perished and it was heartbreaking to see the raised wreck rust in the harbour whilst legal proceedings went on for many years. I doubt the poem will place in the contest but I write from the heart and whatever comes into my head as a theme I go with:-) hugs Jan xx

Of the sea, it's part of me. Took a grandad, a trawlerman, my mum's dad. I never got to meet him. Bet there would have been tales he would have told. Of days at sea, its giant swells, of trawlermen bold. Alas the only grandparent I can remember, was his wife, my granny Hebblethwaite, she died in 1953. My dad was a WW1 orphan, his dad killed in the war and his mum died before the end of it. Sad, pleasures I know I missed. Sad but a wonderfully evocative piece for me, thank you. hugs Mick

Salty Sea Dog -- whoa! Great title! … What's remarkable, Jan, is that this poem just drips with the sincerity of a young lady writing about her revered late uncle...And yet, it's a fiction write...It's the mark of a gifted, talented poetess to be able to pull this off. Bravo! ! ~ Gershon

Jan, that was a cool way to do the contest entry, Jan. I have no clue about Patina!! Something to do with rust and a color of rust. Love this title too, Salty Sea Dog!

Your poem and the museum photo brought it all to life for me. I imagine many men who lived on your island had skin of such patina. A wonderfully clear descriptive write, Jan.

There are some wonderful postcards and pictures of the old manx fishermen Lin. Not sure if the sponsor will like it but I rarely place in his contests anyway just got inspired at the last minute:-) hugs Jan x
