Pantoum
A poem with a verse form consisting of three or more stanzas. It has a set pattern within the poem of repetitive lines. The pattern in each stanza is where the second and fourth line of each verse is repeated as the first and third of the next. The pattern changes from the last stanza to the first and third lines are the second and fourth of the stanza above (penultimate). The last line is a repeat of the first line, and the third line of the first is the second line of the last. No rhyme is required.
As Japanese cherry blossoms bloom pink,
Spring dabbles in assorted pastel shades.
When April rains offer the soil a drink,
water trickles as it flows and cascades.
Spring dabbles in assorted pastel shades,
purple crocus, and yellow daffodils.
Water trickles as it flows and cascades,
and green grass colors the valleys and hills.
Purple crocus and yellow daffodils,
pushing through the soil, summoned by the sun.
And green grass colors the valleys and hills,
for Winter lies defeated; Spring has won.
Pushing through the soil, summoned by the sun,
wildflower blooms carpet the forest floor.
For Winter lies defeated; Spring has won,
and Nature rearranges the decor.
Wildflower blooms carpet the forest floor
when April rains offer the soil a drink.
And Nature rearranges the decor
as Japanese cherry blossoms bloom pink.
