Our Greek Getaway
Dear friiends those who first read my poem i left an important line out in the donkey story
The first dance after our wedding,
Was absolutely exciting, intoxicating,
My darling whispered in my ear,
My wedding present to you is three weeks
Touring Greece, the evening came to an end,
We courteously said our thank yous and goodnight
As every body teased us, and threw more rice.
It was our wedding night, no more can I tell!
First class no less, this was so great,
I went to sleep exhausted and before I
Knew it, we were landing at a hectic airport
Athens, then transferring to Kerkira- Corfu
How inviting the blue azure Mediterranean Sea
Looked below, for sure we would go for a swim.
Today, I couldn’t wait to submerge myself into
That sparkling clear water.
There is even a historic casino in Corfu.
We traveled north, not only seaside destinations.
Visited the Meteora, a formation of
Of rocks many hundreds of steps
To the top exhausting, and who lives there,
Eastern orthodox Monks so devout ,
Rocks of thousands of Years old,
The monastery, once entered, could not be left,
So they would enter, after four years would take their vows
And live and die there. If women arrived wearing Sundress in a tour, monks would hurriedly approach them and put a shawl over their shoulders.
We traveled North passing villages.
Where a woman ‘s husband on their wedding night
Night, had to prove the next day his wife was a virgin,
By hanging their wedding sheet outside their house.
We visited the island of Idra or, Hydra,
Where we saw an old man with a donkey,
With a sign round the donkey’s neck
Asking would you like a donkey ride.
Up into the saddle the old man and hubby
Helped me, hubby took photos of me on the donkey,
Suddenly the donkey farted, we were traveling.
Upwards, the smell intense ‘signome parakalo’ –
Please accept my apology, said the old man
My donkey, rarely does this, the next thing the
Donkey dropped to its haunches, I grabbed him
Around his neck and held on for dear life, as the
Donkey pooed and farted his lungs out almost
It ran down the street, some horrified, most screeched with laughter,
It splashed onto onlookers, smeared me and smelt like sh..t!
I was still holding onto the donkey’s neck, my
Husband concerned how to get me off
The donkey, there was only one option , so
Stood ankle deep in this stinky poo ,
We both smelt bad, went back to hotel amid disgusted looks,
But hey on honeymoon, so had a very long shower together.
Four days left which we spent in the mecca of
Tourism, Athens, we visited Plaka and an awesome
Taverna where we danced to our hearts content till the
Early hours of the morning, we visited the Parthenon which,
In fact, was built about 440-BC on the Acropolis hill,
A magnificent structure. Went sswimming and sunbathing at the
Famous Glyfada beach, we visited Marathona more ancient ruins,
With the best sunset I have ever seen, and then it was
Time to leave.
We boarded the aircraft at 8.00 pm the following night
and arrived in Johannesburg
Almost ten hours later at Johannesburg airport.
Of course, I had done a lot of shopping and my
Family were delighted with the gifts I brought back for them.
Hubby and I went home, he carried me over the thresh hold,
And how I loved it, a little old fashioned and that brings
My story to an end, oh and we are living happily ever after
For the rest of our lives.
THE END.
