I used to be a happy girl,
who smiled all the time;
I like to jump and twirl,
and up trees I would climb.
When I was a bit older,
death came into my life;
as I wept on Mom's shoulder,
my soul stabbed with a knife.
Once, laughter was the music in my soul,
once, my glass of life was full to the rim;
once, no storms shook the ocean of my sleep,
once, my heart was not broken into pieces;
once, I was happy and knew who I was.
When I was all grown up,
I met the man of my dreams;
we went for a date in his pickup,
he liked fishing in woodland streams.
Soon a baby was on the way,
but again death came to visit and take;
and baby in this world could not stay,
then, when my love died I was heartbreak.
Once, laughter was the music in my soul,
once, my glass of life was full to the rim;
once, no storms shook the ocean of my sleep,
once, my heart was not broken into pieces;
once, I was happy and knew who I was.
So many I loved are now lost,
and even my own self of me is gone;
for death- I have paid a huge cost,
and the essence of me has withdrawn.
Once, my heart was not broken into pieces,
once, I was happy and knew who I was;
Once, I was me.
