On Near Death Experiences

A woman’s spirit hovers
above an inert body that is hers.
She sees the surgeons cutting
and then sees their frantic efforts
as they try to bring her back to life.
She had died and yet is able
to describe exactly everything
they’d said and done
when her anesthetic wears off!

Others – many others – have had
similar experiences called NDE’s.
Many see a tunnel or a light,
and some with loved ones long departed
may briefly unite.
Their hearts are gladdened.
They wish not to go back to this life
that most of us fight so hard to stay in.
But God alone determines when we die,
and so we know it was not time for THEM either.

Science cannot prove the afterlife,
nor can it disprove it.
How can anyone explain NDE’s
wherein the subjects’ hearts stop beating
or there is no brain activity?
They try to say the mind hallucinates
when on the brink of death,
but how can they account for miraculous recoveries?
And how do they account for the utter joy and love felt
by the many who get that precious glimpse of heaven?

What kind of light of such resplendence
could make a person wish
his soul had not even been returned to his earthly body?
Things that mortals cannot understand
in time (and in death) will be comprehended.
Lucky are the ones for whom
near death comes to them,
for death to them would have to be
a thing never more to fear again-and instead-
would be a thing to live for!

You describe well the enormity of a world out there of which we know nothing and as the military says, "We do not have the NEED to know." Well-done Andrea.

Congratulations to you Andrea for your first place win! This poem is wonderfully crafted and wonderfully spoken - things we cannot explain and the world will never understand. I think we call that a miracle! Blessings to you dear friend. Thank you for entering this poem.

Congratulations on your win in Sotto’s contest Andrea. We will never know for sure wether near death experiences are for real or just hallucinations, I believe in life after death though, so maybe it can happen… Belle

Life after death, no-one has come back to admit or deny, that there is eternal life after you die. Yet i have the experience of my father who died at 66 - he had cancer and from 101 kilos, he came down to 40 and died in our arms from a heart attack, his eyes opened like saucers, he knew he was dying and was prepared but death came so quickly and painfully that the fear in his eyes were scary. However, he was a good man and a believer, and I know in my heart, he is in Heaven. Hugs, Jenn.

You have generalized this topic unlike as many of us did, giving it altogether a universal appeal ! Death is a mystery. Fortunate are those who get a glimpse of the other life and who could travel till the great portal of heaven still staying at the threshold. Strange that most of such experiences have a commonality ! Beautiful poem Andrea...!

The overwhelming evidence of NDE’s recorded just cannot be ignored anymore. As usual, beautifully penned, Andrea, good luck in the contest.

I don't see eternal life as a gift, but as a fact, as nothing is destroyed but simply becomes something(s) else. We are all limited by the borders of our own mind, e.g., Heaven, to some, is being reunited with their pet. Nice write, Andrea! Good luck in the contest! Aloha!

You have described the NDE perfectly Andrea. My mother died for several minutes and she explained her experience the same way. She did not want to return. Of course since this happened to my mother I definitely believe in NDE’s. Bravo! Blessings xxoo

I read many stories about NDE. Some see tunnels, others a room with lists of the good and the bad someone committed. Others a voice pronouncing a sentence for evermore. I never had one. But I believe in afterlife. Work hard to transverse the long and narrow path towards Heaven. Hugs

Yet it's not by deeds that any may boast.. Dear friend Victor.' the gift Of eternal life (is just that ) a free gift from the creator of all.' Especially good things.' It's not easy even after accepting that Gift, but God lightens the load,
