Oh Ogden, Our Ogden

Will one write an Ogden Nash? A touch o' wink, bit a blink And then, add a glint o' guile... Doing all, with wryest smile. Or could it come out "Mish-Nashed"? Since Nash, he himself, had mashed His isms into witticisms Leaving most in a mad dash - Tribute, 8 Line, Light Verse, 48 Words, To Ogden Nash Noted American Poet 1902 - 1971

Sam, your Ogden affection goes in the right direction. His wry humor gives all us poets a well needed break in what is a line of too many bland verses. His humor stops us, sends us in another direction. A noble cause me thinks.

Loved that you responded with a "Nashism". A fine one too. A couple of your PS pals have noted your appreciation of Ogden, even before your kind note. Since childhood, he and Carroll have been favs for me. I think we share that. So it goes.

Absolutely delightful Greg! Ogden Nash is one of my favorites with his wry sense of humor! He is always a favorite of Gershon Wolfe. Congrats and high fives on your win!

I love his "The People Upstairs" :) I remember at junior school in UK being introduced to several of his poems and one about a cow that had the whole class laughing. It's been said that he was one of those poets who thought in rhyme. :) Yours, Greg is a lovely tribute to a poet too often dismissed. Two of my own poems were influenced by him The Obituary Poem and The View From Pisa. Cheers - Gary

Cheers Greg! For some reason I posted twice (now put right) I shall read Wordingtane when I get in later. Look forward to it.

Just read your two poems and got that Nashian smile from both. The obit one did have the deeper surprise which would have to kept tickled Ogen even though it made no sense at all and was silly in fact. Now I need to read your Lewis Carroll inspirations. One of mine is Wordingtane, if you have the urge.

Dear Greg, I adore your wit and word play "Mish-Nashed" (I so love that!:)) - and admire your use of clever humor and creative rhymes used to capture the droll essence of Nash. I marvel at how marvelous you are, dear poet, as I'm sure Nash does too. A fav for me! Warmest wishes, my talented friend.. ~Susan

Indeed, my friend. I agree with you about poets being trapped in their lanes, and that we (you and I) learn from each other, as I feel we are both "lifetime students". That we can still learn from someone even after their death speaks to their true greatness as a teacher. And yes, that is amazing!

What saddens me Susan is to see so many talented poet writers trapped in their lanes falsely protecting their voice. If nothing else, Ogden laughed at our hubris. He teaches and makes us laugh, testing our depth as readers. Like you, he is one of my teachers. Funny thing, his poetry keeps on teaching long after he has gone. An amazing thing. Thank you, dear poetess.
