Oh, Mighty Men

"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." Mahatma Gandhi Oh, Mighty Men Oh, mighty men who think they have the right to play at being God when they are wronged - Throughout history we’ve seen their kind. They think their acts of vengeance make them strong. One insult to their reputation and it wasn’t long ago, they’d have a duel! In modern times, law suits they might bring, taking all they can from their offenders, for to turn the other cheek they think will make them weak. Oh, mighty men, who bring their kinsmen into war for grievous crimes that should be dealt with by a court or leaders of nations who cannot see a side other than their own: How many more innocents in this world must die because of unforgiving hearts made of stone and pride? Written for a contest but also this kind of thing made me very mad to think about it! I don't have many angry poems, but hopefully my anger for these men shows in this poem!!

longest time friend. You've just exhibited to the highest quality exactly what I have missed in here for months. Your lines are so exciting and your words are each having that second hand of drawing me back to them again and again and again irrespective of how many times I have gone through them. Its nice to be home and you are part of the reason I have this refreshing feeling. A definite 7. Cheers!

Loved the poem, yet it seemed to read to me like an angry poem, I've never felt that before while reading your poetry...maybe it's just me...good luck in the contest

yes, it is an angry poem. I don't use anger much. But I hate these kinds of men! they bring such horror and woe to the world.

Great modern Sonnet, Andrea! And powerful words of wisdom against a mindset that has sadly ruled for centuries. All the best in the contest. Sandra

I have been reading poems by people who used to write about beauty and love all the time. Now, I am seeing more and more writing that reflects distaste for the status quo. Watch the democratic debate on CNN this coming Tuesday, October 13th and tell me what you think, please.

Andrea, this is very good. There is certainly too much violence in this otherwise beautiful world of ours. I just love the way you penned this. I've also seen how some very rich folks use the legal system to intimidate people with fewer resources. The legal fees ultimately can force us into submission even though our cause may be just. It's all about power and domination.

Strong, perceptive sonnet. Hoping I'm not one of those "mighty men" or woman.

G'day Andrea... your message is clear about the frustration of understanding these blood lusting tyrants. If they actually fought each other there may be no war at all - thank you Andrea - Lindsay

Man is to pig headed and self centered to forgive or turn the other cheek. I wish it were different.

You are employing nice sarcasm when you call them "Mighty Men". Reminds me of the Honeymooners when Ralph Kramden said the "world as it is was made by men, Alice, men" She replied "I'm glad one of you has finally admitted it" Peace & Love Matthew Anish
