Oh, Autumn

Today I really feel it; I feel it in the air,
and even though I still can feel sun’s glow,
the breeze is blowing cooler through my hair.
Mr. Sun, your throne seems to be getting low
up there in September’s blue so fair.

Oh, Autumn, you are here now. You are here!
Since the Equinox I’ve truly known.
Nature calls for you; I need no seer,
no fanfare or announcement. I’ve simply grown
accustomed to knowing when you are near!

October’s on the doorstep. I feel that too.
Geese in V’s will cross God’s heaven on the way
to warmer climes. A most wondrous view
will greet me when the mountains I’ve seen every day
flaunt garbs of brilliant hues! But why do I feel blue?

It never fails, this melancholy comes to me in fall
regardless of the beauty that I see.
Like my life, oh Autumn, you come not at a crawl,
but quickening your pace, you come each year to me.
Just one time, Autumn, let the winter wait . . . please stall.

This so reminds me of the song "If I could turn back time" or maybe just put on the brakes to slow it down! Winter has been slow to come here in CA this fall with extended warm day and little rain! Wonderfully written Andrea! with your signature imagery. Congratulations on your win!

How nice to read your poetry again, Andrea! I am new to Poetry Soup, don't know my way around, and only accidentally found you. You described autumn and its melancholy so well. Not that I experience that here in the islands, but I do recall it from my past stay on the mainland. Warm aloha, Molly

Andrea, I think on this poem when I see the nomadic birds flying in formation. The winter can't be kept waiting for long. -Richard

Fall colors fade too fast, and then naked trees seem so depressed while undressed. I love this poem Andrea. Your talent shines so brilliantly. I am sure Emile will adore this entry. Another fave for me! Blessings xxoo

A lovely example of this Quintain form with an appealing bitter sweet shading at the end (and a sentiment I can share). Good one! Andrea.

Hello Andrea, 'It never fails, this melancholy comes to me in fall ~~ regardless of the beauty that I see.' You understand the season so well. Especially for one's living in the autumn of their life. Maybe a time to think back on spring and summers past., with melancholy dreams that never seemed to last. -Richard

Yes, autumn we can enjoy but winter is a little harsh. Maybe it will be late and mild this year but I feel here in the south it is going to be a really cold one. Sara
