Nine For Breakfast (Multiple Tanka)
NINE FOR BREAKFAST (multiple Tanka)
he counted just six
after all it was raining
cats hate to get wet
but normally there were nine
nine hungry cats for breakfast
they all had a name
most to match their color
midnight and shadow
rainbow a red brown and white
marmalade orange long hair
ghost all gray and white
ravenous always hungry
patches tortoise shell
tray a tiny black and white
stripe american short hair
this morning just six
he could not help worrying
they were family
three of them had no front claws
these three were quite defenseless
cared for then turned out
turned out to fend for themselves
miles from their warm homes
to a world of predators
midnight shadow marmalade
these three were careful
they stood off while the rest ate
they got leftovers
these three were missing breakfast
he couldn’t help but worry
bowls were empty now
all six had left the front porch
he’d withheld one can
“kitty kitty kitty” he softly called
"midnight shadow marmalade"
then out of nowhere
through the driving wind and rain
all three came as one
wet wild frightened and hungry
oh then how that man did smile
