Moving in silence, tethered to a thread of silk, she is both beautiful and dark. One bite and her prey can't move, though not dead, for slurping her food alive's her trademark. The widow's outstretched legs are sheathed in hair, sensitive to the slightest tugging twitch. And hidden safe in her web, she waits there for a struggling insect to flip her switch. Flaunting her infamous hourglass tattoo, she gives warning to predatory birds. And yet, her silk, sparkling with drops of dew, can leave you feeling breathless, without words. Nature's selective, yet beyond reproach, whether it's spiders or the common roach. (Sonnet) 2/22/2020
