My Native Culture

My tribe moved every few years Migrating to follow resources and more hospitable land We watched and respected local traditions, ate local food, learned the language Each place we lived was home Many of us stopped moving when we found the Pacific Northwest The land spoke to us – told us we have found our true home My ancestors worshipped salmon They protected the runs and gave thanks for the nourishment I love this land – this is my home The salmon, trees and rain are all my friends I watch and respect the local traditions, eat the local food, but haven’t learned the language I wish I knew the local songs and dances and ceremonies to celebrate my joy Wish I could celebrate my connection to my home Not sure how to reach out – the local culture seems closed to me I feel I will always be seen as an outsider here Wish the local culture would welcome us One thing I found while I moved around Everywhere feels like home to me, everyone is part of my family
