Modern Day Mama
My toilet was a hole outside
inside of 4x4 rotten wooden box with a door
I was young and old then life filled with drama
I was a modern-day mama
my kitchen has running water
with a hand pump water taste like iron
I had to crank the handle up and down
2 inch roaches racing down the walls
spiders drinking hot taw taws
I was a modern-day mama
my kitchen has running water
dishes made of tin
wishing I had more of them
cast iron skillets pots copper pans
ate raw dandelion greens
had a wringer washing machine
I was young and old then
life filled with drama
I was a modern-day mama
my husband worked while I cooked and cleaned
I stayed at home and nurtured the children
and every day we would pray
neither nuclear bombs nor Worldly diseases would hinder our day
I was young and old then life filled with drama
I was a modern-day mama
Sunday school we will
my husband and I would
continue to praise raise head and hands
to the sky and acknowledge God for all he does
we would share this with our children
and if any child got hurt I'll kiss them always
while mending their pants and skirts
I was the modern-day mama
