please, I must beg this gift from you
if you could but delve deep, my eyes
and break the frozen, bleak disguise
to rend that dungeon, tried and true
there's one dark creature lingers there
devouring dreams and hope like treats
no thoughts to what or whom it eats
while stripping bone and marrow bare
it thrives by scrounging joy, you see
and cackling while it promptly drains
the faith and lifeblood from my veins
this hell-bound beast, named Misery
oh, winks and grins may paint my face
with perfect portraits sketched to hide
those screaming torments deep inside
that stir 'neath pretense, without trace
but, if you'd draw him out to see
the burning brightness of the day
perhaps, I just might scorch away
the monster's mask, to set it free ...
that beast inside me ... Misery.
