Metro
METRO
The escalator descent:
A slow steady assembly line
Turns us into robots
Same speed, same direction, down
To the hellish heat, deafening noise,
With all speech deadened,
And movement of limbs.
The thick darkness and sudden light,
The entombed motion of zombies
Though satanic mills and furnaces.
Packed tight to the glass wall
Like pickled herring in a jar
A thousand identical herrings
Sealed in a moving glass coffin.
The crush and buried anonymity
The hurtling speed
The sudden loss of balance.
Then release,
Movement, ascent,
Fresh air,
Life
