Memorial Days

I remember Memorial Days from long, long ago In the mountains, there was still a chance of snow, But we took our flowers to the old cemetery Where we honored the dead, lauded our military, It was the time of the year for families to gather Kinfolk came from far and near despite the weather, Generally, high school bands played patriotic songs And picnic baskets were a buffet for the throngs, I remember playing games amid the old tombstones While drinking sodas and munching on sweet scones, It was the beginning of summer, school was over We searched through the grass for a four-leaf clover, We left the cemetery awash in beautiful flowers The monuments all shining like marble towers. When the long day was over, we felt mighty good All tuckered out, but bellies were filled with food.

I loved Memorial Day since my birthday was that weekend, and we were out of school almost every year on May 28th! These are my memories too! Throw in a carnival on the town square and getting to dress like my twin and my cousin!

Honouring those gone before us especially those who protected our freedom at home and overseas, happy memories Milton. Tom

A lovely poem Milt based on lovely memories. I'd be lost writing poems without memories. I'm fascinated by the pronunciation of the word 'scones' in your poem - many in the UK pronounce the word as you have done here (to rhyme with tombstones).. with the o as 'oh' unlike myself and others who pronounce it as rhyming with 'Fonz' :) Yes, words fascinate me. :) Nice work. Cheers - Gary

Thanks so much, Gary. I learned something. I wasn't aware of your pronunciation of the word "scones." Very interesting. Well, either way, they taste mighty good!
